The client's brief was to upgrade the original liquor store (The Rocks) and transform the space where the existing Thai take-away was situated, into a fresh, low-key wine and beach bar, The Barrel. The environment had to feel light, breezy and informal, but also comfortable. The Barrel is situated in a seaside community, and the owners wanted the transition from the beach to the bar to be a seamless experience for customers.
We proposed boxing in the old existing tiled roof line with slatted timber, transforming the exterior into a contemporary space with ample room for the new signage.
The interior is an open-plan space that has an unassuming, laid-back look. We used a combination of pine furniture, tiled floors and gave the brickwork fresh life with a coat of charcoal paint. Lush indoor plants mimic the natural local surroundings. Lighting came in the form of exposed bulbs and oversized grass shades, which added a low-key beach bar feel.
