This project was a collaboration with KOOP architects.

If you lived in Durban in the late 90’s and early 2000’s you would have spent some time at BBB, or Bean Bag Bohemia. Some of you may have spent a considerable amount of your time there. Bean Bag was a bar, cafe and art gallery that had an eclectic hedonistic electric personality that kept Durban alive and kicking into the early hours of the morning.

Sadly all good things come to an end, and BBB closed its doors. The road that was once bustling with energy went into a long slumber and slowly deteriorated. Fortunately the opportunity to renew the area, was spotted and the property was bought with the vision to bring the infamous institution back to life. KOOP architects were commissioned to redesign the building as a Jazz club and we were asked to imagine the interiors for the building .

The ground floor interior is opulent but airy and inviting with a cafe feel, making use of light neutral and terracotta colored marble for the curved bar counter, and floor with pressed ceilings and a bespoke sweeping staircase that draws you upstairs. The cantilever front window opens up and connects the lounge to the outside cafe terrace.

A bold jazz mural greets you as you ascend to the upstairs bar that has a darker, richer colour palette of navy, fudge and copper, that fuze perfectly creating a sultry old world 1920’s vibe for the evening jazz sessions.

It was an absolute pleasure contributing to this project and a piece of Durbans rich social environment.
